IPU New Zealand Kodama Drum Team entertains at The World on Stage
On Saturday, 30 June 2018, cultural groups from around the Manawatu entertained the Palmerston North community with an evening of multicultural dancing, costumes, singing, and music at the Regent on Broadway.
Organised by the Manawatu Multicultural Council, this biennial concert involved ethnic performance groups. including the IPU New Zealand Kodama drum team, African drumming ensemble Manawataki, and a samba band to dance audience members up from their seats at the end of the concert and out on to Broadway.
The audience was wowed by the highly polished performance by the Kodama drum team. The drum team has been performing to local and international audiences since IPU New Zealand was established in 1990. In fact, when many visitors to Palmerston North think of IPU New Zealand, they think of the drum team and their awe-inspiring music—taiko drums, flute, and chants—and costumes.
Organiser, Tania Kopytko, congratulated the team on their professionalism and spirit: “Thank you sincerely IPU drum team. You were all wonderful!” Local arts reviewer, Stephen Fisher, was also impressed with how all the vibrant cultural activities and communities were showcased so colourfully and joyfully at this year’s concert.
