Sakura Celebration a casualty of Level 2

IPU New Zealand is celebrating our 30th Anniversary this year and we were looking forward to sharing that with the Palmerston North communnity. The famous IPU New Zealand International Sakura festival, one of the yearly highlights of the Palmerston North event calendar, has been cancelled for 2020 due to the increased risk presented by Covid-19..

Planning for a large scale festival began in earnest in 2019 and we were on track until the lockdown in March. Following the lockdown and looking at the initial projections from the government, a smaller family centric celebration had been planned with picnics, food trucks and outdoor performances, a way to keep the festival spirit while scaling the event in a way that is conscious of the limitations presented by the pandemic. With things looking well under level 1, all was in progress for a successful launch. However the recent return to level 2 and the restricitons that come with that, we have reluctantly made the decision to cancel the event until next year.

IPU New Zealand would like to thank all the people and businesses who have assisted us to create our festival every year and we look forward to seeing all of you at our next exciting festival in September 2021 for our 31st Anniversary.
