JAPANESE STUDIES MAJOR

This major is centred on papers that emphasise the development of a foundation in Japanese language skills as well as an understanding of traditional and contemporary Japanese culture, modern society, politics, and business.

Japan is not only a highly-influential country in the Asia-Pacific region, but also a major part of international relations, business, tourism, and education markets with New Zealand. The Japanese major allows students to develop a strong foundation in Japanese language, while gaining understanding and knowledge of Japanese culture, society, politics and business. The language programme, taught by native Japanese speakers, places equal emphasis on the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, in order to build professional communication skills in students.

COURSE CONTENT

At IPU New Zealand, you can study the Japanese language from the beginning, or from the level of proficiency you have already achieved. You can also study a number of papers taught in English which provides you with an insight into Japanese culture, such as Japanese business.

IPU Japan Student Exchange

Students in the Bachelor of Contemporary International Studies (BCIS) programme have the opportunity of a one Semester study exchange, allowing them to go to IPU Japan to study, and immerse themselves in Japanese culture and language, while still working towards their degree.

JAPANESE LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TESTING

JLPT is an internationally-recognised certification of an individual’s Japanese proficiency level. IPU New Zealand strongly supports students in taking JLPT, right from preparation to receiving their results.

This is a annual national competition in which IPU New Zealand students can have the opportunity to compete, enabling them to showcase their Japanese language skills in a challenging environment.
